Because Nice Matters….

August 14th, 2007

I am often reminded of a quote that was on the card from the Missions Team they gave me…

“When you do good things for others… you do good things for God.”

And… the old adage… what goes around comes around.

Yesterday, I arrived in Atlanta for a 1.5 hour layover… but things changed mid-flight and it became a 3 hour layover…

No biggie… I’ll check email and chat for a bit…

When I sit down at the Relax and Recharge station I overheard a man frantic to find someone at home with a computer and internet access. He needs a rental car in Tulsa… see, the airline could only get him as far as Tulsa… but he needs to be in Oklahoma City…

When I booted up, I had internet.

I was rude and interrupted his phone conversation… I offered him my laptop to make his arrangements and he hung up on who ever he was talking to.

I guess he didn’t believe me when I said that he could use my computer… but I assured him that it was okay.

After making his reservations in Tulsa, the lady sitting next to me and I both wished him good luck.. I added.. “This happened for a reason.. I can’t tell you why.. and you may never know why.. but there’s a reason this is all happening…”

Reluctantly, he replied with “I know” thanked me and was on his merry way.

I did a good deed for someone.

I did one on the way to Ohio last weekend too.. I paid the toll for the person behind me. I told the toll woman that I didn’t know the person.. just to tell them that it was my random act of kindness for the day.

I don’t do these things for recognition or for praise… I do them because they genuinely make me happy. They really do. The cost for both of these acts? $1.25 and a little time. I can spare that.

But what happens when you do these things?

You’re blessed.

Shortly after the frustrated passenger left I checked my email again and found that I had been bestowed an award from Deena….

Nice AwardHere are the details of this award….

“This award is for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world. Once you’ve been awarded please pass it on to others who you feel are deserving of this award.”

Now I’ve talked about Deena before…

Don’t know her in person… she lives across the country from me.. in California… and normally we talk and reply by comments on blogs…

And she’s near and dear to me… :) A HUGE blessing…. :) And some days I wish I could call her up and ask her to grab a coffee with me… :)

So thank you Deena… :) It’s nice to be thought of this way… :)

And I get to pass it on… :)

Karen at Surviving Motherhood
Lisa at simply His

And as I think of more… I’ll pass those along too… :)

Until next time…

Heather

Very good Heather! You know a couple weeks ago when we were flying Scott’s daughter back home… we noticed on our way back to the van there was a young teen looking real nervous and had tears in her eyes. I went up to her and asked if everything was ok..and she real sadly said yea I’m waiting for my dad. Scott said does he have a cell and she said yes but I don’t have a cell phone. I hurriedly whipped out mine and offered it to her, her face immediately lit up. She called him and she guided him to where she was in the airport and he arrived.. she just busted out crying and hugged her daddy. Her dad thanked us and we were on our way. I got goose bumps after that because I was so glad we were there at that moment to help her.

That’s a very inspirational and motivational post. It’s inspired me to look for a “random act of kindness” to do for someone today.

You are so sweet. Yes, it is the random acts of kindness that make life worth living. And the children.

I’m glad I’m not a nice person, though, cause I hate those damn award! :)

Random acts of kindness are a great feeling. Being on both ends (the one doing a random act of kindness & the one receiving a random act of kindness) I know what a blessing it is to do both.

    Congrats on your award.
