You know what I’m really thankful for?

in 30 Days of Thanks, Heather's Quirks, Thoughts...

That the Pilgrims and the Indians didn’t do this Thanksgiving thing once a month. Because seriously… i couldn’t do this all the time.
But I can report that I, Heather Jacobson, meal burner extraordinarie have successfully made the following:

  • stuffing
  • deviled eggs
  • green bean casserole
  • double layer pumpkin pie cheesecake (x2)
  • pumpkin cheesecake
  • pumpkin pie

Tomorrow morning I will be up bright and early and stuffing that bird and plopping it in the oven… so that I may head over to the best church. ever and partake in our orphan dinner. (Orphans as in those participating have no family in the area or were unable to travel home for the holidays… not as in we’re hosting a bunch of real orphans.)

I’ll also be watching the Macy’s Day Parade and I swear… do not bother me between 11:40 and Noon EST as I will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa. It is at that point in time that Christmas can officially begin. I will not put out one decoration or address one card… or sing one Christmas Carol until Santa has arrived only after being announced by Willard and Al.

I will however shop because I abhor the malls after T-day and can’t pass up sales if they happen to occur before the fat man makes his debut…

I have been doing this for years, and tomorrow will be no different. I don’t care if I am almost 25 31.

And speaking of ridiculous traditions that started when I was a child and haven’t left, last night I watched Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving… by myself. BY MYSELF as in my children, who were home and could watch with me, wanted nothing to do with Chuck. What is up with that?

I’m a little scared. Will I be watching It’s Christmas Charlie Brown all by myself too? What about the Grinch? And the year Christmas almost wasn’t? What about Frosty? Or Jack Frost? Or Twas the Night Before Christmas?

I don’t care if I am. They are all set to tape in my DVR along with A Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation and White Christmas. I’ll watch them all 10,000 times and laugh over and over again as I recite the words, or in the case of White Christmas, sing along wishing I was Judy.

“Sisters… sisters… there were never such devoted sisters… never had to have a chaperone, no sir… I’m here to keep my eye on her… caring… sharing… every little thing that we are wearing… when a certain gentlemen arrives from Rome, she wore the dress…and I stayed home…”

I could go on… but I won’t… (and seriously, I know all the words and the moves and when I’m with my mom… we can do the whole act… I’ve scared you now, I know…)

Ok, so I’ve rambled long enough.. long enough for the clock to strike midnight making it officially Thursday which means two things…

(a) I got my Thursday post in for NaBloPoMo…. and (b) I can officially say…. (to all of my American readers anyway…)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!!!

Until next time…

Heather

PS. For those of you in other countries, how do you know when the Christmas season starts? I mean, for me, it’s always been Thanksgiving! Just curious….

30 days I am thankful for… thanksgiving.. time of fellowship, food, and football.. and for the memories and traditions that were started in my childhood that I still adhere to and pass along to my children even if it seems as if they are uninterested.

I am thankful for my faith, my church, my beliefs… and I’m thankful for all of you… who, for whatever reason, continue to come back to see me… i’m still baffled by that one!

Oh! And I’m REALLY thankful for gravy in a jar… because there’s just no way I could ever pull that off!

Gravy in a jar here, too! Oh no! I missed the Charlie Brown special - I love that! The food/desserts you prepared sound yummy - hope you have a great time at church.

Happy Thanksgiving! I wish you lived closer, then you could suffer through my in-laws with me :D Ok, so that probably wouldn’t be much suffering for you, but it’d make me feel better having a pal around. Enjoy your dinner! It sounds like you made enough food for an army!

Tell Pastor Man I said Happy Thanksgiving too :) I enjoyed meeting everyone last Sunday! And don’t worry — the recording we made of you hasn’t made it’s way onto the internet … yet …

Hi Heather,

You asked how people outside the US know when Christmas has started. Well, speaking for myself, living in the Channel Islands (just off the coast of France but definitely British), it starts December 1st. That is when my tree goes up and the Christmas songs start playing. I particularly love Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole etc. I love to sit in a darkened room with just the tree lights blinking and a fire burning in the grate. Like you, I also start to watch the Christmas movies. My husband and I once spent Christmas and New Year in the US. We went to Lake Tahoe for Christmas and it was amazing!
