For the next 7 weeks I have to be up at the butt crack of dawn… even on the weekends that the kids are with their dad… simply because I don’t miss games for my children, regardless of which house they are sleeping at…
and because I’m loved so very much, one of them has a game at 9am every single week… except one week… the first one is at 11… but pictures are at 9:30…
Now this morning, I contemplated missing Sam’s game. The alarm went off and I hit the snooze button… I thought to myself that it would be okay if I missed one game… but I know myself well enough that missing one game will lead to the downward spiral of missing more, so I got out of bed.
A few people have asked me why I go to the games on the weekends that I don’t have children and it’s pretty simple… I want to experience their games, their victories and defeats… that and I paid $85 for each of them to play, I want to see my money in action!
Plus, this year it’s a little different… last year I had a cheerleader and a basketball player, but this year, I have two basketball players.
Samara was adamant on playing ball. I talked to her, told her what it was all about and when she still was firm on “trying something new” I registered her. I was sure that after the first practice, or first game if I was lucky, that I’d be begging the Upward coordinators to move her back into cheerleading. But I was wrong!
Last week, she looked like a pro, short of skipping down the court… and she even made her first basket. She got the rebound and after a second or so pause of shock, she put it back up. It was the first time she handled the ball in the game and was awarded the Best Offense star at the end of the game because “she made every shot she took.” She’s even got a cutesy little nickname on her team… Snickerdoodle Sam.
Even on the sidelines, she was into the game…
And then there’s Matt… he continues to give everything he has to the game. While Sam was boastful of her basket, that’s not important to Matthew… perhaps because he learned in football that he would never score a touchdown, but was still a vital part of the team.
He loves it again this year and put forth quite the effort. He received best defense… I’d be scared of him if he were guarding me… especially knowing of his football history…
But what they liked most?
Returning to our church to run the scoreboard and the time…
All the excitement, none of the sweat…
So, I’m off to watch some hoops…
Until next time…
Heather

Cute. Brings back memories of lots of 10-6; 8-2 etc. final basketball scores. Love “she made every shot she took.”
