The Best Valentine’s Day Ever…

in According to Samara, Manly Man Matthew, Mom Stuff

this is what my son told my BFF today after school… he called it the best valentine’s day ever… for me?  Well, considering that I didn’t even have to worry about it, at all, because I’m in another state… was good.

(For the record, I did get a text message first thing this morning wishing me a happy v-day, a little card from my sales manager, and a huge box of chocolates… ok, so those were for all of us in the sales meeting, not just me.)

But, Matthew?  Well…. Matthew scored himself a valentine.

Last night, while waiting in the airport in Memphis, Becki called and said “Our son has a girlfriend.”  (This would be our running joke… I’m off jetsetting and my “wife” (aka my BFF) is home with the kids… we’ve had some fun with it this week…)

I respond with, “Excuse me?”

And then she told me the story.

Apparently, Wednesday morning they had a delay and Matthew confided in her that he was going to ask Brooke to be his valentine.  If you’ve been around these parts for any amount of time, you’ll recognize the name, Brooke, because she’s the one that broke his heart last May when she dumped Matt for another boy.

He wrote a note that said, get this… Will you be my valentine?  Circle one:  yes no i don’t know

How cute is that?  Not quite as cute as the secret admirer note that he wrote to her, but close.

So he comes home and proclaims to Becki that she circled yes.  And he’s happy.

He then, later tells me about this new found valentine.  I asked him what happened to the other boy and Matthew, just so cute, I wish I could’ve recorded it said…

“Oh that was Josh… he’s just a girlfriend stealer.  He stole my girlfriend, Nick’s girlfriend and some others.  But don’t worry mom, he’s out of the picture.”

So exit Josh, re-enter Matthew.

And he’s just as happy as a lark.

Tonight, I called him and asked how his day went… “It was the best Valentine’s Day ever,” he said. “I think Brooke really likes me.”  I could tell he was beaming.

“Why do you think that, Matthew?” I asked.

“I can tell when she’s blushing, and she blushes around me, alot.”

There you have it… blushing = true 5th grade love.

It’s just so funny… I kid you not, five people on this trip have told me (complete strangers I might add) that they would’ve never guessed that I was 31… or that I had an 11 and an 8 year old… I was feeling kinda young, kinda sassy…. and then?

My son has a girlfriend and I’m jerked back to reality that my baby isn’t a baby anymore.

Rude awakening.

And then there’s Miss Samara who apparently was a little jealous Wednesday night that Matthew had a Valentine and she did not.

When she whined, “No one asked me to be his valentine,” the “wife” looked at her and said, “you’re an independant woman.  You don’t need to wait for some boy to ask you… you ask him.”

I asked how that went and was shocked to learn that Samara told her that she was “this close” to asking a boy (I’m not sure which boy) to be her Valentine, but she couldn’t.

I really was shocked.  My daughter is typically headstrong and confident.  I half expected her to walk up to some boy and say “listen here bucko… you’re going to be my valentine!”

There you have it… valentine’s day from the home front…

Hope you had a wonderful one…

Until next time…

Heather

That is too cute! I checked Anna Marie out yesterday after her party, and had to bring her to my office for a few minutes because my husband wasn’t home. She was going through her bag of Valentines and one of the ladies at the office asked which one was from her boyfriend. She told us that they “weren’t supposed to talk about that stuff in kindergarten.” Guess someone got to them trying to head off a harassment lawsuit!

I told her that was fine by me - she had plenty of friends that were boys, and didn’t need a “boyfriend” in kindergarten anyway.

So people think you’re younger, too? I get that ALL THE TIME!!! I’m 36 and they think I’m in my early 20s. Makes me wonder what they’re thinking when they see me walking down the street with my kids - 11, 10, and 7. Oh, well, let ‘em think!
