Now we're getting serious…

With all the cooking I've done in the past few weeks, I've decided that I need a new stove.

Please don't misunderstand.  It's not that a new stove would be nice… I really need a new stove.

So this morning, I announced my decision to the BFF who promptly replied, "Now I know that you're liking this cooking thing."

Truth be told?

I am.

And to continue creating culinary delights in the evenings a new stove is very important.

It would be nice to be able to fit more than one cookie sheet in the oven (because I only have one rack).   It would also be nice to have more than one operable burner.  (I have two that work, one that works right and one that only goes on high… which may explain why I keep setting the timer smoke detector off.  One never worked from the time I moved in and the other one was lost in the great meltdown around this time last year.)

Because I know nothing about purchasing a stove and because I will have this stove for quite some time, I called my mother to ask for her advice.

She had none, really… I mean nothing that I didn't know already.  She said she prefers self-cleaning but that it wasn't important and that all the bells and whistles are nice, but you rarely use them and the more you have, the better chance you have at breaking.

I mentioned about possibly buying a used stove to which she replied that it was a great idea.

Then I expressed my concern about having to find someone who could help me deliver it and remove the old stove.

"Call the Smithsonian.. they'll gladly take it," she said as she roared with laughter, obviously tickled with her response.

There's a reason… my stove?

Is from way back in the day…

Let me show you…

100_2454.JPG

This?  Is my stove.  Note the avacado green color.  That alone tells you the era it's from.

Now you might be wondering where my sole working burner lies…

well, they are tucked away… and it's really the coolest thing about my stove…

Let me demonstrate…

100_2456.JPG

There is a little button that says release… and you press on that…

100_2457.JPG

And then you pull them out…like so…

100_2458.JPG

And there are my burners… (excuse the mess, I hadn't yet cleaned up from dinner)…

100_2460.JPG

All these buttons?  Aside from the fact that they also allude to the era of the stove do not work.

So there is why I need a new stove…

So while I'm off looking up the number for the Smithsonian, why don't you tell me what you like about your stove and what you can't live without…

For the record?  I'm going to offer the Smithsonian the two typewriters located at my mother's house…

Until next time…

Heather

i wish i had some terribly brilliant insight into shopping for a new stove but i don't.
what i can tell you is that i really prefer a gas range. it is much easier to cook on than an electric because it is much easier to control the heat and for the most part, the burners don't wear out. i am currently cooking on an electric stove on which all of the burners work some of the time and even then it is a guess if the whole burner will work or just one side - sure makes for interesting pancakes!

good luck with your search.

Oh goodie! I'm glad you are getting a new stove :) I seriously think I would hurt myself on that thing you have!

I highly recommend the Ceramic Glass Cooktop. It's a smooth cooktop surface that makes cleaning quick and easy — and if you happen to melt something on top of it, it's a smooth surface to it's quick and easy to clean :D

As far as removing your old one, I know Lowe's does this (and I'm assuming other home stores will as well) — they will remove your old one when they deliver your new one. You may have to pay a small delivery or removal fee, but honestly — it'd be worth it!

Good luck shopping for a new stove! Can't wait to see pictures :)

Gosh - I've never seen a cooker with pull out rings before. That's truly bizarre.

Anyway - my cooker does exactly what it says on the tin and I've never felt the need for bells or whistles.

Wow that's an antique if I ever saw one. I wonder if you contacted the Frigdidaire people, if they might be impressed with what you have and take it off your hands. I'm going to assume the stove came with the house?

It's time for a new stove, you poor soul. Wow. Kuddos to you for keeping it this long.

I think you should get the one with the flat burners. You definitely deserve a new stove girlfriend. Oh My!

My stove is gold and from the same era, but it doesn't have the sweet 007 secret burners. You can tell it was luxurious in it's day!

btw, you won…

I've never seen a stove quite like that - my guess is, it was "state of the art" back in the day!

I don't have any great advice either - my stove is old (not that old, but old still) and it works OK. I've heard that glass cooktops are nice, but I agree with your mom: the more bells and whistles, the more stuff to get broken.

Don't do what I did and fall for one of those Ceran Cooktops! I hate it, big time! You have to have absolutely flat pans, no ridges, no slightly bent, or they will not heat up. Unless you keep the top spotless after every meal it will eventually stain black and will forever stay that way, no amount of scrubbing with special scratchless cleaner will get it off. You also have to watch the weight of any pot, no canning/preserving for me using this stove! I bought a small gas stove to put in my canning room for my pressure cookers because the Ceran will break with heavy pots. And don't let anyone get near it with a metal object, the scratches from my Hubby cutting a sandwich right across the burner remind me why I don't allow him in my kitchen!

I love my cooktop with double ovens below. Not sure what brand it is (I'm not at home). It's great, because I can have two ovens going at two different temps (great at Thanksgiving!) or bake three sheets of cookies at once. the top oven is smaller than the bottom, but that saves energy, too. The only thing you don't have with this set-up is a drawer in the bottom of your stove, which is pretty minor to me. Happy Shopping!
