To Delete Or Not To Delete.. that is the question…

August 20th, 2008

Long before I knew about this group of “mommy” bloggers, I had a personal blog.  I mentioned it in my post earlier about blogging.

You can find it here.

For the past two years, it’s been dormant.  I’ve not posted.  But it’s still there and chronicles almost two years of not only my life, but my children’s accomplishments and pictures as well.

There are very few comments, most from my friend Julie and the BFF but that’s not what’s important.  It’s the memories.

But the domain is up for renewal and I’m not sure what I should do.  I have a few options.

So here are my choices… what would you do?

(a) Renew the domain name and leave the memories as is

(b) Move the blog posts over to Desperately Seeking Sanity

(c) Let the name go, but download the content so that you’ll have it if you ever want it

(d) Let it all go… the domain, the content, etc.. the past is in the past…

(e) other…

I’m curious.  I know that I’ll never do anything with it again, but at the same time, I’m not sure that I should get rid of it.

So, what would you do?

Until next time…

Option E! Keep the domain name and do a 301 redirect to your new blog. Keep the domain’s established credibility and apply it to your new blog.

Make it into a blog book (like Blurb books) and keep it like you would a photo album.

I know I responded on Twitter, but I’ll write it here, too. I think you should renew it and keep as is (at least for now). Obviously, you aren’t sure yet what you want to do. To me, that means don’t delete it. Forget the fact that it involves your ex. It also holds TONS of memories about your life, your kids, your home, etc. You had good reason to move to a new blog, but I don’t see any reason to delete the old… seems like throwing away your old family scrapbook just because your relationship didn’t last.

I don’t see any problem with moving the posts here instead… just not sure how much of your time and effort that will require. Seems like it’d just be easier to pay the $10 and not worry about it for another year. LOL

    Heather,
I can’t tell you what to do, but I agree that these are important memories, no matter what baggage may come with them. Delete it if you want, but keep the material in some form, even if it’s just on your hard drive at home. You will want to look back at those posts one day. The best way to avoid having regrets later is to try hard not to do anything you might regret. I think, if you delete it all, chances are good that regrets will pop up sooner or later.
    Just my opinion.

I would strongly encourage you to keep it, either by renewing the domain and keeping the dormant blog or by moving it to the Desperately Seeking Sanity blog.

The memories or the past is what has formed you into who you are today and it is something you should keep.

It seems to me that if you needed to ask someone’s (anyone’s) advice, you’re not ready to let it go yet. And that’s okay. If money isn’t an issue, renew the domain and leave it as is. if money is an issue, go ahead and download all the content so you have it.

I read through some of those posts and there’s so much of you and your family there. I don’t think you really want to let that go. It is a part of all of you.

Whatever you do, keep it in some form. You’ll be glad you did so you and your kiddos can look back if you’d like.

I’d say definitely keep it. Either by moving over the entries or downloading them. I’d do both but I’m a bit of a packrat. :)

Either b or c. If only because it chronicles what your kiddos were doing. That’s one thing I love about my blog. I can look back and see how my little one has developed over the past year. I’m too lazy to keep a real journal or diary!

I like Gary’s option or Tara’s option above. But definitely don’t delete it! That’s memories and you have to redirect or keep them somewhere… for your children when they grow up, if for no other reason…. Don’t you think?

I’m always sentimental when it comes to holding onto memories. I would do either b or c. I don’t see any reason to renew the domain and keep paying for a separate site if you’re not updating it. So, I would either import it into this blog or just download the material into a file on the computer so that you still have all the memories. :)

My vote is C. Keep the content and then let the past go, if you so choose to do so. ;) But if I know you well enough, I know that you will want to keep a copy and have it for use if a need arises.

I would just import all the posts so you can still keep them. No one tends to go that far back to read. Or if you’re really worried, you can just make them all private when you import.
