The Things and I have a lot of conversations in the car. In fact, while I abhor taking them to school in the morning because it’s morning in general, I ADORE picking them up in the afternoon.
I LOVE the 30 minutes we have to talk about our day, or anything else they may randomly bring up.
We recently finished listening to “Killing Lincoln” as we drove to and fro. And somehow, a few days later, we talked about history in the making, nothing in particular, but just history when a question came from the back seat.
“Heather,” Thing 4 asked in her sweet little oh I want to eat you up voice, “What if you or Dad ended up in my history book?”
I paused slightly, my mind racing with all the ways I could make history.
Side note: I had a professor say to me once, “Heather… you’re going to set the world on fire – I’m not sure how, but I know you’re going to do it.” Ever since that statement I wonder if every thing I do is the spark that will ignite my setting the world on fire.
“That would be AH-MAZE-ing!” I exclaimed but curiously asked, “How do you think I’ll make history?”
“I don’t know, but if there’s anyone I know who could make history, it’s you.”
It’s probably not going to be for my parenting or step-parenting skills, I can assure you, but knowing that your step-daughter believes in you?
It’s that nugget you need to keep you going on the days you just don’t think you were ever supposed to be in this parenting game at all – and that maybe, just maybe, you’re doing something right.
